Pool Pumps

There are two “types” of Pool Pumps – Single Speed and Variable Speed. Most reputable Pool Builders will install the Variable Speed Pump because of their Energy Saving ability.

Single Speed Pumps

  • These Pumps can only run at one Speed (generally around 2850 RPM).
  • When your Pool is in normal Filtration & Sanitation mode, you do not need a Pump running at this speed, all you are doing is burning energy & money.
  • These Pumps are cheaper to purchase initially, however will cost you more in the log run.

Variable Speed Pumps

  • These Pumps are able to have their Speed adjusted to suit the individual needs & wants of your Pool. They would normally start at 2850 RPM and then after a few minutes revert back to their programmed Speed (normally somewhere between 1800 RPM & 2400 RPM).
  • The programmed “normal running” speed will vary. You may be running a Suction Cleaner (generally needs a stronger water flow to work correctly) so you would run it at a higher speed. Also the time of year, swimming load, environmental conditions etc, may also dictate at what speed you wish to run your Pump.
  • While dearer to buy initially, most Manufactures believe that you will recoup your additional costs within 12 Months due o the energy savings.

Should you operate your pool pump during the day or at night?

Considerations for Energy Efficiency:

  • Do you have Solar Panels on your House, if so you may wish to run the Pool during Daylight Hours to use your “Free” Energy.
  • If you don’t have Solar, then depending on your Energy Plan, it may be more beneficial to run during the night between Peak Hours.

Effectiveness of Filtration:

  • Operating the pump continuously during the day ensures that the pool water remains clear and clean especially if it is used often.
  • Nighttime filtration may be sufficient if pool usage is minimal during daylight hours while still maintaining water quality.

Considering Noise Levels:

  • This can be reduced by using Variable Speed Pumps.
  • Running the pump at night could minimise disruptions to activities and neighbours during the day.
  • For some, noise at night may make daytime operation more preferable.

Personal Preference Plays a Role:

  • Ultimately deciding when to run your pool pump depends on your routine and preferences.
  • Seeking advice from a professional can help customise a schedule that fits your requirements while optimising efficiency.
